Sometimes it feels like is quite hard to see or hear or attend something in Berlin that has not somehow something to do with some members of Einstürzende Neubauten, or Malaria!, or the most prominent krautrock bands. But then again, what’s wrong with that, they made the history and I wake up with their songs in mind pretty often (Achtung! Achtung! Geld regiert die Welt!) This film by Mary Ocher and Julien Binet seems to offer an interesting twist – the claim “How far can we rewrite history?” is intriguing – and the screening happens in a lovely music-focused bookshop you should discover, if you haven’t yet.

LABOR SONOR : TRANSLATING MUSIC

Is translation a form of art? No, according to the Künstlersozialkasse. I’m not sure I agree with them – even though they consider art what I make for a living (web design) and I like them quite a lot because of that. What about translation in music? Interpretation and manipulation of existing material do go next level sometimes – be it The Slits’ cover version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” or the liveset of our friend JD Zazie. What about a whole festival focused on this process, crossing the border between genres – modern composition, improv, electro and more – and featuring a really attractive selections of performing musicians and sources? Sounds good.

PERFORMANCE NIGHT #24

On Friday evening I will be dealing with an ubiquity issue (see above) that I present to you as well: Performance Night #24 at Spektrum is hosting three talented characters working on the border between disciplines and techniques the way I like – skillful, witty and very personal. The program includes the scientist-musician (and partner-in-crime of mine) Du Champ with the deep drones of her baritone guitar + Embedded Artist, the collaborative digital-analog Gesamtkunstwerk by Wolfgang Spahn – you may have seen something of the magic he does with slide projectors, or of his liquid project with Martin Howse – and Malte Steiner – media artist, composer and sound developer.

SCREENING NIGHT #26: BIG SCREEN BRUTALS

Good art is sometimes brutal, disturbing and unpleasant. To refuse such statement would imply that a cute marine landscape by an amateur is better than, say, Francis Bacon’s paintings. Apply the same to music and moving images and get ready for some “noisy, glitchy, psychedelic, offensive, violent, hilarious and quite beautiful combination of sound and vision” – selected by Scott Sinclair.
